What's new for netbooks in 2012 is quite substantial. Cheap prices? Yes! The most exciting part of the new netbooks is the updated Intel Atom Cedar Trail processor which is the greatest improvement to the netbook category in years. It's almost like Intel was trying to bleed out netbooks because the category didn't provide their partners with enough profit. With that said the new Intel Atom processors will provide about 3x the video and graphic ability over previous generations. That means 1080p HD video playback! In addition, finally netbooks will come pretty much standard with a HDMI out port. In addition, AMD has their new low power processors which provide even better video and graphic ability with a cheaper price point.

Yes there are going to be fewer models to choose from, but the fact is the available netbooks are much better than previous models. We've seen Dell leave the netbook space and we've seen a decline in overall selection. When there is hype around a category in technology everyone jump aboard. The hype passes, there is a settling period, and the quality manufacturers and products remain stronger than ever. There doesn't need to be 100 netbooks on the market when 20 give you the selection and quality that you need to satisfy your needs.

A Look Back At The History Of Netbooks

The netbook category really started with Asus and the Asus Eee PC. If you recall, the netbooks started out pretty darn small at 7-inches and had Linux operating systems.

Asus didn't stop at the 7-inch Eee PC and continued to evolve the concept. No, Asus weren't the first to create "netbooks", but they were the first to popularize the category. In fact a company owned the trademark for the term "netbook" which eventually became a generic term for small cheap portable laptop style computers. There was quite a battle in the early days with fighting over labeling products as netbooks up until the point that the trademark was relinquished.

Asus created some other size netbooks in the 8-inch and 9-inch sizes. For a while the 9-inch netbook was the standard size. It took a while later before 10-inch netbooks became the norm for the category. Today you will see most "netbooks" as being 10.1-inch size. The 7, 8 and 9-inch netbooks are no more. The fact is, people want more screen and more reasonable sized keyboards and touch pads. Netbooks really did evolve and the ideal size of today at 10.1-inches really proves that point.

There was a big push as netbooks became trendy. Every manufacturer flooded the market with their own models. It's a far cry today as a lot of netbook selection has gone away. Companies like Sony just couldn't get a competitive price point and have bowed up to offer premium style netbooks instead. Dell is another company that decided to not release new netbooks. Certainly netbooks have had a rough ride through 2011 with the emerging trend of tablets. With technology things come and things go. Don't expect to see tablets dominating the headlines in the near future. Just like netbooks, tablets will see a settling effect where there becomes fewer models and fewer manufacturers. Only the strong survive and we've already seen some tablet failures like HP and BlackBerry.

Moving forward, expect there to be even more cheap netbook computers. Asus continues to push with cheaper yet better netbooks. With a 3 cell battery you can get 3 to 4 hours of battery life and you will pay $250 or less. If ARM processors start showing up in netbooks, the prices will drop even further without causing poorer performance. We will keep you posted on all the developments on these ultra cheap netbooks.
