We are on the verge of AMD netbooks from Asus. In fact they are in pre-order status in North America and will be fully launched within weeks. Asus AMD netbooks look to be the first but I’m sure the other main netbook manufacturers will soon follow.
Up until now, the netbook has been somehwhat cursed by the futile Atom GPU. Very unimpressive to say the least regardless of the many updates to the Atom processors over the past couple of years. They left the door open and it looks like AMD is going to run with it with the netbook category.

I’ve been watching eagerly as the AMD netbooks start to make their way onto the market. It looks like Asus netbook models will soon be shipping with AMD processor options. There are a couple major reasons why you want to consider AMD over Intel powered netbooks.
First, graphics processing. Intel Atom have been hampered by lame graphics. Playing games on Intel Atom netbooks overall is a frustrating experience. Intentional? Who knows. Up until now you had to find an Nvidia ION GPU with your Intel Atom netbooks to enjoy excellent video and graphic performance on a netbook. The ION + Atom combo netbooks are not overly common in which case the price is more at a premium. So yes, you can get a gaming netbook powered with Intel Atom and Nvidia ION but you pay more and have less models to choose from. In fact, the 10.1″ form factor has about two ION netbooks to choose from. So AMD netbook means great Radeon graphics. It will surpass the ION + Atom combo. You don’t need to check detailed spec pages. If it’s AMD processor it will have Radeon graphics.

We should all praise the latest news coming from AMD and their new and upcoming fusion processors. The AMD netbook is going to set a standard by which we all deserve. I’ve been a believer that netbooks can fly, but the company building the brains for them was thinking of loyalty and $$$ which resulted in the holding back of netbooks. Yes, netbooks can fly and AMD is going to prove that in the near future. We are going to get more bang for the buck and the notion that netbook mean gutless will be a thing of the past. The only part which hasn’t been learned or proven is in the battery life of the AMD netbook. I can’t imagine they would be bragging about these new processors if they weren’t equal or better with battery usage than the Intel Atom. Stay tuned folks. The build up to the AMD netbook is going to be an exciting time. We can’t wait!

I thought it would be fitting to show a photo of the AMD executives. The landscape of netbooks is about to take a drastic change. The reason? AMD and their upcoming “Ontario” chipset which is designed for netbooks. It’s a direct attack on the Intel Atom. The AMD netbook will have graphic performance that is a game changer. Another code name for this processor is actually “Brazos”. It will also include a dual-core version. This AMD netbook will be DirectX 11 capable.
As in previous posts, I’ve mentioned that I know the industry and have followed it closely from a netbook perspective. What was always lacking was a threat to Intel and the Atom. Now we have it. And it’s coming very soon. We should all praise AMD and wish them success because if their product and technology can compete, the monopoly of Intel will change. We will get more out of our netbooks simply because Intel has to. They will be forced to provide better power and better graphics from Atom because AMD will start to take their business away.
Late 2010 is going to be an amazing time for netbooks. The AMD netbook is indeed the game changer that certainly I’ve been waiting for. Thanks AMD.
