I've certainly been following closely what's happening out there. Some would accuse me over being overly protective of netbooks. I'm fine with that. I love netbooks.
With that said, I've been on somewhat of a crusade over the past year. This all started for me when Dan Akerman from CNET used the term premium netbook. He was describing the non entry level cheap netbooks and netbooks that went from 11 and 12 inches and size and came with more premium features like a full Windows 7 OS. The fact is, premium netbook works. It helps the consumer. It help clear up the rubbish that some websites and blogs like to do. They like to keep all these confusing terms around which don't make it any easier for the shoppers out there looking for a netbook. I bring this up today because the new Lenovo S205 premium netbook. Yes, not my words but Lenovo's own description. Yes, the phrase "premium netbook" is being used in the promotional materials for this 11.6" Lenovo S205 netbook. I can say this is the first time I've seen a company using premium netbook. I certainly hope more follow. It's about time people realized that netbook is a portable secondary laptop. Netbooks shouldn't be thought of as ONLY cheap. Just because you pimp it up with better components, it still remains a portable secondary laptop. So let's give 3 big cheers to Lenovo for pioneering the usage of premium netbook to describe their Lenovo S205 netbook. Please let this be the first of many! We like to keep things simple for the consumers out there. We know there are various laptops out there that call themselves "ultra thin laptops", "thin and light laptops", "ulv laptops", etc. Essentially there is a laptop out there that has all the characteristics of a netbook. If you agree, we think of a netbook as a secondary computer. If you want to pay more for that secondary portable computer, we bring you "premium netbooks".
