I mean, you are getting basically a brand new netbook at a reduced price! How so? When something comes out of a factory, chances are it's working pretty darn well. How can we say that about a refurbished netbook? Is buying refurbished better than buying used? So long as you can trust the retailer and the information about where the netbook was sent for refurbishing, then it's a better option than used. They both have some risks, but a refurbished netbook backed with a return policy is the better option over buying used. When buying refurbished netbooks, the ability to return the unit is better than rolling the dice on a used netbook. Buying used is a much bigger gamble and hardly worth it in my opinion. Is there a difference between "factory refurbished" and "refurbished"? Yes. Factory refurbished refers to a product that has been returned to an authorized factory service center and have been restored to the same quality standards as a new product. In other words "factory refurbished" means that experts of that brand (authorized) have done the refurbishing. If you see "refurbished" this may indicate that the refurbishing was done by a non authorized service center. That's not to say it won't be as good, but it's like taking your Honda vehicle to a Honda service center (costs more) than taking your Honda vehicle to the local garage (cheaper). Will refurbished netbooks ship with original packaging and contents? In most instances yes. However it is best to check before buying if that is important to you. Some refurbished netbooks may be missing owners manuals but those can always be downloaded from online sources. Original packaging is a bit more difficult to answer. Sometime yes, sometimes no. It really depends on the online retailer. Ultimately packaging will be discarded so it shouldn't really be a deal breaker for you. What types of return policies or warranties should I look for from retailers?
Once I recieve my refurbished netbook, what should I do? I would advise you to put the netbook through its paces. In other words, use it a LOT. Make sure that odd behaviour is not happening. If something seems odd, then investigate immediately. You should essentially be on high alert during the warranty period. The important thing is to not accept odd behaviour from the netbook. Odd shutdowns or other glitchy behaviour on a refurbished netbook means send it back. It's not worth keeping if your gut instincts are telling you something is wrong. A big tip is also not to settle into the refurbished netbook for the first couple weeks of owning it. Think of the first few weeks as being a test period. This means put your personal files onto a usb drive or sd card. It's better to be cautious and almost assume that you have to return the netbook. Face it, do you want to install all you programs, save all your files, import data, etc only to find that the netbook needs to be returned for a new one? Is there a difference between refurbished netbooks and open box netbooks? Yes. Refurbished units have been returned because of defects whereas open box is a situation where a customer returns the unit because they don't like it or it didn't meet their expectations. Open box netbooks were not returned because of defects, but because of a shipping mistake or they weren't satisfied with the netbook. In fact some refurbished netbooks being sold are simply open box. For example, a customer buy a netbook, opens up the packaging, then decided they don't like it for whatever reason and they return it to the store. That netbook now is being sold as "open box" or sometimes called and sold as "refurbished".

Once a netbook is returned to the factory, fixed then shipped, be assured it has passed all the same tests and it has passed. The key is to ensure that the unit has been factory refurbished. Go with a reputable online store and you will have nothing but savings.
The longer the better! A 30 day return policy isn't that great, but I wouldn't buy refurbished netbooks from a retailer who has less than 30 days. You will see some places selling with a 90 day return policy or satisfaction guarantee. These are the trusted online retailers who you should be shopping with. Also look at what costs you will face should you have to return it. Who pays for shipping?
